🎓 The History of Tennessee’s Tax-Free Weekend

🎓 The History of Tennessee’s Tax-Free Weekend

When Did It Start?
Tennessee's inaugural sales tax holiday took place from August 4–6, 2006. This initiative was introduced under Governor Phil Bredesen's administration to provide financial relief to families preparing for the new school year. (tn.gov)

Why Was It Started?
The primary goal was to alleviate the financial burden on families during the back-to-school shopping season. By exempting certain items from sales tax, the state aimed to make essential school-related purchases more affordable for working families. (tn.gov)

What's Included?
During the tax-free weekend, specific items are exempt from sales tax:

  • Clothing priced at $100 or less per item

  • School supplies priced at $100 or less per item

  • Computers priced at $1,500 or less, intended for personal use(tn.gov, tn.gov)

These exemptions apply to both in-store and online purchases, provided the items are bought for personal, not business, use. (tn.gov)
